Pacific Parrotlets
I have many times read that Parrotlets are described as pint-sized Amazon parrots and I believe it. These little guys are not afraid of any one or any thing. They love to play and eat. These are their favorite pastimes. With proper care and training they can be taught to talk and do tricks. (I have also heard of them being described as the world's smallest talking parrot.)
Parrotlets are very intelligent and active little birds, so they need plenty of room. Be prepared to accomodate them with a large cage and plenty of toys. Their cage should be at least 24 x 24 x 24 with 1/2 -inch or less bar spacing (recommended in BirdTalk Magazine). They also love swings. I have seen several on one swing a time, all scrunched up together. They must have ample opportunities to play and exercise. Enviromental enrichment (toys and interaction with their person) are crucial. If they get bored, health and/or behavior problems may arise. They can keep themselves occupied for hours provided they have plenty of toys for distraction. Once you get home though, they will greet you so sweetly. They are a very good pet for apartment dwellers.
Like the Cockatiels, Parrotlets are sexually dimorphic. In almost all of the color mutations, the males have blue markings over their eyes, along with their wings and on their rump feathers.
Parrotlets originate in South America, from the countries of Peru and Ecuador. They are among the smallest of the New World Parrots.
These two have moved on to their new homes. Check back though,
we should have more soon.
